What will eye drops really do if ingested?

In the movie Wedding Crashers the eye drops make the guy sick, but I saw a Law and Order I think SVU where they killed a lady....so I am confused. I think they just killed the lady because they do something to blood vessels and she had issues or was just old. I don't know, hopefully one of you does.
