Question about NASA's spaceship & heat?

When the space ship is entering the atmosphere, re entry, why do they have to come in at such high speed like several times of the speed of sound which leads to high heat on the ship? And can the ship enter the atmosphere at any time or are there like specific hours or locations in space before entering?
