Need help with Sony vaio laptop and windows Vista!?

I just purchased a Sony Vaio Laptop the summer of 2008. Yesterday my laptop decided to update itself. For the past 12 hours my screen is still the same "Configuring updates 1 of 3 at 0%". I check it a few hours later and now it’s just starting and shutting down in its own. I don't know what to do! I purchased the laptop through Best Buy with no other warranty. Do I call Sony or Vista for help? Please help, I am computer illiterate!
